Hardwiring a Radar Detector - [return to main mods page]

In order to hardwire in your radar detector your will only need a couple of items:

1. An Add-A-Circuit fuse extender (for small fuses)
2. A socket set
3. Some 2 conductor wire
4. A Popsicle stick or similar
5. A radar detector

The procedure is pretty simple. Find a good place to mount the radar detector. I chose to mount it next to the information center near the top of the windshield. It is behind my tint strip and cannot be seen from the front of the car or from the rear of the car when it is turned off, which is good to prevent break-ins.

I wrapped the wires around the mounting bracket and the wiring harness to the rear view mirror. This keeps the wires out of the way. Next tuck the wire behind the headliner to the A pillar on the drivers side. Once at the A pillar, carefully tuck the wire behind the plastic cover using the popsicle stick. When you get to the dashboard, loop the wire around the end of the plastic cover and pull it towards you. This will lock the wire in place. Run the wire between the dashboard and the side of the car where the fuse panel is located. You should be able to tuck the wire in so it cannot be seen..

Choose a circuit that is on when the key is in the ignition. I chose the cruise control circuit. There are a number of them that will work as well. Remove the fuse, plug the Add-a-circuit module in the socket and replace the fuse into the correct socket on the add-a-fuse module. Use another fuse for the radar detector lead. Connect the ground wire to the bolt in the chassis.

Enjoy your hardwired Radar Detector. No more ugly cords.
